Hillside families – be sure to get involved in the redistricting process!

ALL students and families deserve the opportunity to be actively involved in their nearby community schools!
Here is the final map that is up for vote with the school board:
Screenshot 2014-12-12 12.39.13
The current map violates two of Fulton County’s own primary redistricting criteria:
1-Geographical Proximity (children are being bused to third-nearest schools)
2-Instructional Capacity (there are schools OVER or AT capacity right next to schools UNDER capacity). Hillside would like to be a community school, filled nearly to capacity with neighborhoods close to where we live, shop and play.  There are simple, sound, fair, and criteria-based solutions to this request that would benefit the entire map.
In order to consider these changes – the school board would have to vote down the current map.

2)  Attend the December 18 School Board Meeting at Dunwoody Elementary @ 6 pm. Wear Centennial Blue.
3) E-mail our school board reps:
Julia Bernath (bernath@fultonschools.org) – Represents the majority of the Hillside Community
Linda Schultz (schultzl@fultonschools.org) – Represents the apartments across 400
Please note that Linda McCain – (mccainl@fultonschools.org) – doesn’t represent the Hillside Community anymore; however, she does represent neighborhoods that that attend Haynes Bridge MS & Centennial HS. In addition, she has represented certain neighborhoods that attend Hillside in the past.
4) Attend the Community Meetings for Hillside representatives in December, January & February
Linda Schultz – 12/17/14 – 9:30 Hembree Springs
Julia Bernath – 1/21/15 – 9:30 am Holcomb Bridge (w/Linda Schultz)
Linda McCain – 1/21/15 – 9:30 River Trail MS – See note above

THEME: “The world would be a better place if…”

Reflect on the theme. Create an original work. Be recognized.

October 8 is the due date for Reflections projects. Reflections is a national PTA program that encourages students to create and submit works of art in one of six categories. All students who submit an entry will be recognized in their classrooms and have their work on display at the Reflections gallery at  International Family Fun Night. Visit hillsidepta.com/reflections for forms, and contact Shana Spalding at spaldingrf15@yahoo.com for questions.

Posted on the PTA door at Hillside and on the PTA website at hillsidepta.com is a proposed by-laws amendment.  This change will allow for up to two people to share the Vice Presidents roles for each program area.  The posting is done with at least 30 days’ notice and to allow the general membership to review the change prior to being put to a vote at Hillside’s curriculum nights, August 26th and August 28th.  If there are any questions, you may contact Sandy Craig at sandycraig02@yahoo.com or Leah Ward at lhward@bellsouth.net.

College and Career Readiness Performance Index

College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI) is the rating process that the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) began using to report school performance beginning with 2012 data. The report for 2013 performance will be released with changes to the criteria formula.  To allow for an equal comparison between 2012 and 2013 ratings, the GADOE recalculated the 2012 ratings of all schools to match the 2013 formula. This recalculation resulted in a change in the original 2012 reported rating and lowered original scores for most schools throughout the state. While this may result in lower ratings for 2012, it will give an apples-to-apples comparison to show growth. This adjustment reflects the states focus upon growth rather than simply achievement.

The following documents should be reviewed by all stakeholders to prepare for the release of the 2012 and 2013 CCRPI ratings:

Hillside CCRPI 2013 to 2012 Comparison

At Hillside we are committed to working collaboratively with the administration, teachers, staff and parent organizations to review the new newly published formula and continue to build our school improvement plan to meet the needs of our school community.

International Family Fun Night

Hillside Elementary is hosting an International Family Fun Night on Friday, October 4, 2013 from 5:30-8pm. As we prepare for this event, we would like to know if you would be interested in participating in an evening of cultural food, music and dancing. We are looking for families to prepare food samples to share with “tourists” traveling around the world where they receive stamps for their passport. We are looking for fun table settings with artifacts and a list of fun facts about your heritage and the country you are representing.

Example: My family is from Brazil we have prepared Açacá, Three Fun Facts about Brazil are
1) host of the 2016 Summer Olympics, 2) has the largest rainforest in the world, 3) approx. 1 million residents are Asian.

If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Byas at lisabyas@gmail.com.
