Hillside’s 5K Husky Dash was a Success!

Hillside Elementary turns 10 years old this year. To celebrate a decade of educational excellence, Hillside held its first annual Husky Dash 5K on March 3rd. Despite a night of intense rainstorms and a menacing, rainy sky the following morning, the Husky Dash was a huge success! Volunteers came out in the wind and rain to set up for the 5K, Sammy Rosenberg kept the energy level high as the awesome DJ and MC, and runners of all ages braved the cold to tackle a challenging, but fun, race course. Spirits were high and the atmosphere was festive as runners were cheered across the finish line. Thirteen year old Alexander Augusta stated, “As a Hillside Alumni I was so proud to run the Hillside Husky 5K dash. They are number one in my heart and number one in my feet.”

Leah Ward, Hillside’s co-president for the PTA commented on the success of the Husky Dash, “While planning this inaugural event, we were unsure about the response from the community. But in the end, what a response it was! We had seasoned runners and those that weren’t even sure what a 5K was; we received tremendous sponsorship from local establishments and corporate names; we had participation from Hillside families, teachers and staff as well as alumni and community neighbors. And even though the weather threw us quite a curve ball, it was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying exercise and fellowship in the freezing cold all in support of their school and community. We are already looking forward to next years’ Dash.”

As technology plays such a critical role in our children’s education, 100% of the proceeds from the Husky Dash will be used to upgrade and improve technology at Hillside to better equip our students for learning in the 21st century.

This event could not have been the success that it was without the amazing response we received from the surrounding community, in particular the following businesses who sponsored the event:

The Marathoners (giving at a $1000+ level) included Big Peach Running Company, The City of Roswell, Children’s Dental Zone, E.nopi Learning Center, Go Marketing, Jontastic, Mibab Orthodontics, The Pediatric Place and Sports Clips.

Join your friends and neighbors as we celebrate the 10^th anniversary of Hillside Elementary!

In honor of Hillside’s 10^th year, the PTA is holding a 5K Run/Walk – the Husky Dash – and all Hillside alumni, including former faculty, are invited to participate. The Husky Dash will be on Saturday, March 3 at Centennial High School, with the 5K beginning at 7:30am and the Fun Run following at 8:15am.

Turns out Roswell Mayor Jere Wood is pretty smart, but not smarter than Hillside Elementary’s fifth grade class.

The class put their best egg cocoon building techniques to work and challenged Wood to a competition, seeing who could prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from one of the Roswell Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder trucks during Science Day, Friday, Nov. 4.

The challenge included three drops: a 25-foot drop, a 50-foot drop and a 100-foot drop.

Though Wood’s egg survived the first 25-foot drop, it splattered at the bottom of the 50-foot drop, unlike half the student engineering teams, whose eggs survived the fall. The eggs of five student groups and Roswell City Council Member Rich Dippolito survived the final challenging drop of 100-feet.

The Egg Drop Experiment was part of Hillside’s annual school-wide Science Day. The day includes more than 40 different hands-on experiments for all grade levels.

Many city and school leaders, including Fulton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa, came to watch the fun. In addition to the engineering of egg-drop vessels from recycled materials, there were bottle rockets launched, catapult flings and laser target shooting.

Hillside’s Science Day is sponsored by Sawnee EMC’s Operation Roundup grant.

Gran-Daddy of PTA Awards!

The Outstanding Elementary PTA Award for North Fulton has been bestowed to Hillside Elementary for the 2010-2011 school year. This award is given to 1 Elementary, 1 Middle, and 1 High School each year based on PTA programs and achievements.

Together with the administration and teachers, the Hillside PTA hosted Artist Day, Character Education, the Yukon Math Program, the Iditarod Reading Challenge, Reflections Art Program and 33 other PTA programs during the year. Hillside is also the only school in the area with a Gardening program and Science Day allowing the students amazing opportunities for experiential learning. In addition, the Hillside PTA achieved Model PTA Status due to strong parent involvement, advocacy and partnership in the school community.

Hillside Awarded Kroger Plus Learning Go Green

This Honor Award is given to the most enthusiastic elementary and middle schools throughout the Atlanta Division to reward them for their students’ achievements – academically, community involvement and extracurricular.

These awards demonstrate how Hillside is being recognized as a benchmark for great parent-administrator-teacher cooperation. Go Huskies!

Hillside Receives Chick-fil-a Core Essentials Award!

On 5/23/2011, it was announced that Hillside Elementary School won the Chick-Fil-A Core Essentials Award for 2011. Hillside’s Character Education is a unique partnership between Hillside administration, teachers and PTA combining Positive Disciple, Classroom Guidance, Core Values, Special Events, Service Projects and Awards throughout the year. Our program has been structured to build character in our Huskies! This prestigious award was given to only 7 schools nationwide out of 800 that participate in the Chick-Fil-A character education program.

This program has been such a huge success because of the hard work, dedication and passion of Patti Blalock, Brenda Levin, Renee Corley and Sheila Sillitto. Thank you for all that each of you did this year!

Again this award demonstrates how Hillside is becoming the benchmark for great parent-administrator-teacher cooperation. We have unique programs that take lots of volunteer hours as well as detailed coordination with our teachers and administration. And our community is really taking notice!

Hillside Elementary Garden ‘Springs’ to Life

ROSWELL, Ga. — Vegetables have begun to sprout in the gardens of Roswell’s Hillside Elementary School.

Last fall, Ashley Ward’s first grade class at Hillside planted a salad garden that included cabbage and broccoli. They used organic methods to care for their vegetables all winter.

However, after the snow and ice storms in December and January, it appeared that the broccoli didn’t survive.

The concerned students sought advice from planting experts at Pike Nurseries, who encouraged them to give the broccoli some time to rebound. This patience and persistence paid off — last week, when the students visited the garden, they were overjoyed to discover that their broccoli was still standing.

Mrs. Ward helped the students identify the plants that appeared to still be alive, but were actually rotten on the inside. They quickly learned that their broccoli plants were not dead, but thriving and ready to be harvested.

A few plants didn’t make it through the winter; the students composted them so they could be used to harvest the healthy ones.

In addition to the broccoli, the Hillside garden is full of lettuce, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions, radishes, collards, Brussels sprouts and peanuts. There are also a few flowering bulbs, including tulips and jonquils.

The garden is being used to teach children about the environment, organic gardening and healthy eating. It is part of the “Planting Seeds, Growing Minds” project that the school developed in 2009.

The garden and its greenhouse were funded through grants from Lowe’s and the Toshiba Corporation. Parents, students, Girl and Boy Scouts, and Hillside’s All-Pro Dads volunteered their time to construct, plant and maintain the gardens.

Hillside Students Make A Difference!

ROSWELL, Ga. – Students from Hillside Elementary School, in Roswell, recently participated in a service project to make and collect blankets for the homeless living on the streets of Atlanta as part of a school-wide character study of kindness. In the U.S. alone, almost one million people are homeless.

“Kindness means showing others they are valuable by how you treat them,” said Lori Fanning, Hillside Elementary School Principal. “This project was the perfect opportunity to teach our students about showing kindness in the community. This service project also exemplifies all the character values we’ve focused on this school year: Respect, Initiative, Uniqueness, Joy, Determination and Kindness.”

Every class in the school made their own fleece knot blanket that was donated to the cause. In addition, students were asked to donate new or gently used blankets. Between the blankets created by classes and the ones donated, the school collected more than 150 blankets that will be donated to City of Refuge for distribution to Atlanta’s homeless population.
